Los Franceses de Nuevo Mexico

Yvon Grole and Marie Odon
1600s - La Rochelle, Kingdom of France

In accordance with Spanish custom and law, a pre-marital investigation was conducted to ensure that the Gurulé–Gallegos couple was legally free to marry.  Jacques Grole, born about 1663, stated he had come to the New World as a member of the La Salle Expedition of 1685-1687, and then later fled into the Indian nations of Texas.  After five years (and numerous tattoos during his time with the Indians), he surrendered to Spanish troops who had found him in Texas.   He was taken first to Mexico City and from there to Spain for further questioning; but was back in Mexico in time to take part in the 1693 De Vargas Reconquest of New Mexico.  According to Spanish custom when non-Spaniards came into this society, Jacques Grole’s name became Hispanicized—to Santiago Gurulé.
