Gurulé Cousins Corner
Biography:
Hi, I'm Mary Kaehny.
I started on my genealogy in 1986 when my mother started having strokes and I realized she was remembering the past more than the future.
She was born in Cabezon, NM (now a ghost town), and I've traced three generations on her side (all in that area). My mother's family moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, as did other families from theRio Puerco area, when she was around 12 years old. Many of our neighbors in Flagstaff were the same ones from Cabezon. Her stories were interesting and adventurous and she often spoke of the Gurule ranch in La Jara where they would go for family gatherings.
When I was about 8 or 9, I went with her and have a picture of me on horseback. This was during sheep shearing time in August, and I met many of the Gurule cousins. The women seemed to have real red, curly hair and very light complexions, and the men had dark hair and large chests and arms. The men were very strong, and I remember one of the cousins picking up a cow over his head. My mother didn't have much contact with the Gurule cousins as time went on, and I don't know why.
Wish I had asked her more questions and documented some of the stories. I had set this side of the family aside for a while as I had come against too many brick walls. When I found the Gurule web site, I was thrilled and it sparked my interest again. I have always loved history and story telling. My connection to the Gurule's is through my mother's father (Donaciano Lovato), and two of his sisters married two Gurule brothers (see my ancestral chart). The Lovato's were from the San Luis area.
