Original Gurulé Research
In March 1987, Virginia Langham Olmsted, a certified genealogist from Albuquerque, New Mexico, published her research of the Gurulé family in the National Genealogy Society Quarterly, Volume 75, Number 1. The article was titled "Grolet-Gurule: Los Franceses de Nueva Mexico" and contained family history for the first four generations.

Virginia did her research on paper, not a computer, tracking records on massive sheets of information.  Though she had access to the microfilms, it wasn’t easy like today where we can pull up a microfilm on our computer screens.  After Virginia died on May 12, 1989, her family donated her research to the New Mexico Genealogical Society (NMGS).

Angela Lewis began working on the Gurulé family in 1998, and in time, NMGS turned over Virginia’s records to her.  Since Virginia’s article in 1987, more records have been located, additional research clarified, and now with the advent of DNA testing, some lineages are realigning.

The below records are from Olmsted’s research, and the green material reflects the changes to date.  To locate the source material, click the Family Tree link on the website, and then Gurulé Families.  There you’ll find a separate page for each child listed below (in descendant order).

One of the exciting changes, for example, was in 2010 when Fray Angelico Chavez’s work,
while he was in a seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio, was found in Santa Fe.  One of the records
was the 27 July 1718 marriage record for Antonio Gurulé and Antonia Quintana.
